31 days. 31 dips. One each day. One world ocean.
Sea swimming, surfing, paddleboarding - any water-based activity, I'm there. Admittedly usually in favourable conditions - clean breaks, calm, mild sea temperatures. It's a choice I'm fortunate and grateful to have.
Unfortunately it's not the case for our incredible marine life - they don't have the choice to decide: 'no more plastic in my lunch please', or 'we don't want to swim in sewage today', or 'can you turn down the heating in our home?'.
This October I'm taking part in the Surfer's Against Sewage (SAS) Dip a Day challenge - whatever Mother Nature throws out there.
Dip a Day
Set-up by Surfer's Against Sewage, Dip a Day challenges anyone to dip in cold water every day throughout October. Whether it’s your shower, paddling pool, lido, local beach or river. Every penny raised from Dip a Day will go towards their ocean-saving work.
The majority of days I'll be at the beach or river swimming - a new thing for me. But in some cases when it doesn't work, a cold blast in the shower will have to do.
Surfers Against Sewage
Founded in 1990 by a group of Cornish surfers from St Agnes and Porthtowan, Surfers Against Sewage is a marine conservation charity working with communities to protect oceans, waves, beaches and marine life.
They call out polluters to stop single-use at source, challenge the UK government and utilities on their sewage pollution, turn the tide of plastic by running record-breaking beach cleans, create change-making, pupil-led education programmes, and empowering every person everywhere to fight for the ocean.
How your donation helps
🌊 £5 could help provide clean up kits containing containing vital equipment so volunteers can remove tonnes of plastic pollution.
🌊 £10 could help fund the SAS free sewage pollution alert app – keeping thousands of water users safe.
🌊 £100 could support a community to protect their favourite swim spots with Designated Bathing Water status.
